Frequently asked questions about the LoRa network

If your question is not here, the Discord usually answers within the day.

Is it legal to put up a LoRa antenna?

Yes. The 868 MHz band is licence-free in Europe, with no declaration needed.

What is the real range of a node?

From 2 km in a dense city to about twenty in open terrain. Height matters more than power.

Can you send photos or browse the internet?

No. Throughput is hundreds of bytes per second: short text, a position, an alert.

Are messages encrypted?

Yes, end to end in AES-256. Intermediate nodes relay without being able to read.

How much power does a relay use?

A few watt-hours a day. A 5 W panel and a small battery last the whole year.

Should a node be left switched on permanently?

Ideally yes. A node that comes and goes weakens the mesh for everyone.

Open protocol, and checkable

Public protocol, off-the-shelf hardware. Nothing ties you to us, and that is deliberate.

The protocol is public

How the nodes talk to each other is published. Anyone can implement it or audit it.

The hardware is not proprietary

Ordinary LoRa modules from the shelf. We sell nothing, and no part depends on us.

Nothing to buy from us
